What Is WIC

--WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) is a supplemental food and nutrition education program that was developed to help ensure the health of prenatal, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, as well as infants and young children up to five years of age.

 

--Based on participants needs, referrals are made to governmental programs and/or community resources.

--The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) funds the WIC program at a national level.  In Missouri, the WIC program is operated by the Missouri Department of Health through the Bureau of Nutrition Services and WIC.

Who Qualifies?

A woman may qualify if she is:

                         --Pregnant
                         --Postpartum (has been pregnant within last 6 mos.)
                         --Breastfeeding (to an infant up to one year of age)

             An infant or child may qualify if:

                         --He/She is under the age of five

     --Must be at a nutritional risk determined by a health professional
     --Must meet the Missouri WIC income guidelines

Our clinic sites are:   Hermann, Owensville, and Linn

Your will be required to provide proof of income, proof of residency, and proof of identity to determine income eligibility.

During your initial visit and at recertification's you will be screened by a health professional for nutritional risks.  Clinic staff will obtain heights, weights, a health history, a diet assessment and screen for anemia.

What Will I Get From WIC?

WIC is a supplemental food and nutrition education program.  WIC foods are a prescription for good health; you will receive personalized checks to buy foods that are high in nutrients such as protein, vitamins A, B, C, and D, calcium, iron, zinc, and foliate.  These nutrients are especially needed during times of rapid growth and development.  Foods that you may receive from WIC would include:

 

- Milk              -Juice           -Formula w/Iron           -Tuna           -Cheese         -Cereal
-Dried Beans and Peas      -Carrots      -Peanut Butter       -Infant Cereal     - Eggs   

 

You will also receive information that will help you improve your nutritional health.  Breastfeeding counseling and referrals to other related programs are available.
